Open shelving works when every object earns its place. Start by mixing functional storage with a limited number of decorative pieces. Too many small items of similar visual weight can make shelves feel noisy very quickly.
Create rhythm using height variation, empty space, and a restrained palette. Stack books horizontally in one spot, use a box or tray in another, and place one slightly taller object to pull the eye upward. The shelves should feel composed, not filled.
If the shelf is in a living or dining space, choose objects that support the room’s function. That keeps the arrangement beautiful while still feeling honest and useful.
