Lighting should support how furniture is actually used. A sofa zone may need ambient light, a reading lamp, and a softer accent source to keep the room flexible through the evening. Dining spaces usually benefit from one strong central layer plus softer peripheral light that keeps the room warm instead of flat.
Furniture textures respond differently to lighting. Upholstery, wood grain, and stone tops all reveal depth differently depending on warmth and direction. When possible, use lighting to bring out those surfaces without creating glare.
The best result is usually layered, not dramatic. Think in terms of comfort first, then contrast, then atmosphere.
