A well-planned living room should feel easy to move through, easy to use, and easy to relax in. Start by identifying the main focal point in the room. That may be a television wall, a window, or a central coffee table arrangement. Once the focal point is clear, arrange your main seating around it with enough space to keep walkways open.
Large furniture should not sit wall-to-wall unless the room genuinely needs it. Leaving a little breathing room around a sofa or accent chair often makes the room feel more refined. If your space is compact, use one anchor sofa, one or two lighter accent chairs, and a table with open legs to keep the layout visually light.
Layering also matters. A rug that grounds the seating zone, soft lighting from a floor lamp, and one or two textured pieces can make the room feel finished without making it busy. The goal is not to fill every corner. The goal is to make the room work naturally for everyday use.
